10K for 10 Years with Fishtank

You read that right!

We’ve been training hard over the past few weeks on our down time in order to prepare for the Asda Foundation Leeds 10k. We’ve been making waves for the last 10 years so it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate each and every one of them with a kilometer of sweat, blood and tears!

It’s not easy to tear ourselves away from behind our desks but we figure, if ever there was a reason to do so, it would be to contribute toward a cause that is held dear to all our hearts.

None more so than MD Damien Fisher.

When Damien’s son, Chester, was diagnosed with an Exomphalos at twenty weeks into his wife’s pregnancy, he and his family spent two and a half years living in uncertainty and constant worry.

Exomphalos and Gastroschisis are congenital abnormalities that affect one in every two thousand and around one in every ten thousand live births, respectively.

Chester underwent abdominal repair aged eighteen months and, thanks to the staff that occupy ward L42 Children’s General Surgical Ward and Neonates/Surgical Newborns at Leeds Children’s Hospital, the surgery was a success!

The team, here at Fishtank, are a proud and thankful bunch.

We think it’s only right that we give something back to the wonderful staff that continue to save children like Chester, today.

We’re unapologetically small with eight full-time and two part-time experts working tirelessly to bring our client’s visions to life.

Working this close everyday comes with certain caveats.

You can’t so much as eat an apple in the office without being scrutinised for it –as Damien recently discovered– but the intimate environment is part of what makes us such a strong team.

That’s why we’re pooling our efforts together with a target of raising at least £100 per member of Team Fishtank.

The fact of the matter is that the NHS needs our help.

Not just Fishtank’s but yours too.

It’s no secret that the NHS has been under fire from the media as of late but not once did this affect the level of care that thousands of children like, just like Chester, receive on a daily basis.

Everyone, from the cleaners to the surgeons have been compassionate, caring, attentive, professional and continue to demonstrate why the NHS is the envy of countries around the world.

It’s high time we acknowledge the service that these ladies and gents do for us and our children and Team Fishtank are proud to be a part of that.

The Fishbowl is a place that thrives on a culture of giving.

Nobody goes without here and this certainly translates to the service we offer our clients.

However, this is one of those rare occasions where we’re asking for your help.

Every penny makes a difference but we understand that you might have other commitments.

That’s why all we ask is that you share this post to your social circle.

If you’d like to contribute to the cause you can do so via our justgiving page here:

Thank you for your ongoing support.

We’ll see you there!

Work Experience at Fishtank Agency

Just last week Fishtank had the pleasure of welcoming a temporary new addition to the team.

Supporting the initiative to close the skills gap and to interest young people in the industry, we have decided to take on a work experience student this year.

Jessica is a Year 12 3D Design student and she joined us last Monday for a duration of 1 week. During that week she supported the Account Management and Design teams by conducting research, analysing qualitative data and helping us with developing a 3D design that will eventually be 3D printed for promotional purposes (watch this space!)

Gemma Curry, our Senior Account Manager was managing Jessica’s work experience and has commented:

“It was a pleasure to have Jessica with us for a week’s placement. She helped us greatly with research, created some fantastic 3d designs and joined our client meetings. I hope we gave her a good insight in to life here at Fishtank!”

Fantastic experience for both Jessica and our team, this week has definitely been a good introduction to a new era for Fishtank… But hush, that’s the topic of our next blog post! For now, read Jessica’s review of her week in our Fishbowl:

“I spent a week at Fishtank Agency for professional placement. The whole team was very friendly, and welcoming, as soon as I walked through the door I felt like a member of the team. The environment was positive all week long which is very motivational and gave me a great insight on working life in the design sector. I am very thankful to have been handed this opportunity as I have developed and learnt many key details that will help with my studies at college and definitely with my future.”

That you for such kind words and for visiting us Jessica – we wish you all the best in the future!

GDPR – what is it and should you care?

Legislation and the influence on your marketing strategy

A new sheriff is coming to town and they mean business.

In less than 2 months, on 25th May 2018 a new EU regulation will come into force, replacing the 1995 EU data protection directive (Directive 95/46/EC). The new legislation, The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) aims to improve data protection for individuals within EU as well as administer the export of personal data outside the EU.

Why should I care?

The new legislation has a massive impact on how businesses communicate with their customers and followers, how they store their data, and how they track user engagement.

EU – aren’t we leaving anyway?

Brexit is no reason to be unprepared for GDPR. The regulation is expected to come into life way before leaving the union does, so marketers around Europe should definitely consider this legislation simply a new standard of work.

That’s a bit vague though…

Basically, before you contact someone – even their work email address – you need to get their permission.

From the perspective of marketing compliance, GDPR will affect any business that:

  • Is in possession or processes identifiable person data
  • Uses email, phone, SMS or mail to contact them
  • Through employment of various tools (e.g. cookies, e-campaigns, landing pages, forms), tracks and monitors their engagement for the purpose of creating a personal profile of the individual

Anyone handling customer data should be concerned – if deemed to be in serious breach of the new rules, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) could penalise them with up to €20 million or 4% of the firm’s global revenue.

This isn’t all either. Under GDPR, should a data breach occur, all companies will have only 72 hours to notify the subject of breach or their organisation may get fined.

Not to mention the reputation damage.

Solution to your GDPR uncertainty…

For more information on how you can safeguard your business before GDPR legislation comes into life, view the 12 step guide prepared by the Information Commissioner Office.

If this feels like much, please don’t hesitate and reach out to us at Fishtank – we’ve got processes in place to quickly ensure your website and marketing communications are GDPR compliant before the big day arrives.

Fishtank Agency shortlisted for Creative Pool 2018 Awards

Valentine’s Day was great, but the best present arrived at Fishtank the day after…

We’ve been shortlisted for the Creative Pool Web Award (again! yay!!) for one of our latest projects: Just Voices Agency website.

You can read about this exciting project below, but before you set off on this literary roller-coaster with a dramatic backstory and captivating characters, could you do us a favour and vote for Fishtank Agency?

Voting closes on 23:59GMT on 23rd February so please vote generously!

The client:
Simon Lenagan and Leigh Matty founded Just Voices agency in 2005. Simon is a successful actor and has worked in the film and TV industry for over 20 years. Leigh started her career as a singer in the rock band Romeo’s Daughter who enjoyed success writing, recording, & touring worldwide in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Over the past 12 years, Simon and Leigh have grown Just Voices to become very highly regarded in the industry for their representation of high profile actors and actresses, presenters and professional voice over artists all over the world.

The brief:
Simon and Leigh tasked us to create a unique, impactful and easily navigated website where their portfolio of clients could be showcased to the highest standard. Their previous website was very hard to navigate, lacked the reflection of their brand and industry focus. Their main objective was to develop and create the best user experience where they could easy search, compare and select their chosen artists with minimal effort.

The Process:
We used Perch for the CMS for the entirely bespoke design and build, where the website can be constantly updated with new portfolio clients, industry news and features with the greatest ease. With the end user always in mind, we delivered a solution that works seamlessly and responsively across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

The layout is striking, impactful and easily navigated meeting Simon and Leigh’s overall objective to showcase their portfolio of high profile actors and actresses. They also wanted to enable the end user to listen to any number of audio clips with the least amount of clicks possible. The design reflects the updated brand style which is mirrored across all other Just Voices marketing collateral.

Fantastic project to work on, the Just Voices website nomination is a great opportunity to thank the agency and all our other clients past and present for voting for us last year, motivating us to push even further and allowing us to keep on creating industry leading digital platforms.

Don’t forget – voting runs until 23:59GMT on the 23rd February 2018

And the winner is…

Fishtank is moving!

We cannot contain the excitement anymore and just have to share the exciting news…

Fishtank is moving to a new office very soon!

Worry not though – we’re not leaving Mirfield. We only moving across town, into the 1812 building within Wheatley Park. It’s work in progress at the moment, but expect an invite to the launch party at the beginning of the New Year!

Due to the move, next Friday (27th October) we will have to disconnect our office phone – fear not, you can still email us though! Everything will be back to normal on Monday 30th October, but if you have any questions regarding the office move and the implications on our day to day work please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The 1812 building is a beautiful stone-built former textile mill located in stunning rural area of Mirfield. The nearby canal and the vividly green surroundings are the perfect new setting for Team Fishtank. We’re sure the new setting will boost creativity and productivity even further – and if that fails we’ll just turn to the new office beer fridge.

In the meantime, feel free to browse our social media channels to track our journey!

Welcoming Mike to the Fishtank Team

Hey, I’m Michael and I’ve just joined Fishtank where I’ll be leading their digital/web offering as Senior Frontend Developer. I am looking forward to my future working with the team here and with clients old and new.

Having been working in a large full-service agency in Leeds for the past 3 years I decided to make the move to Fishtank after seeing the new and exciting challenges that Fishtank and the role has to offer.

I began my interest, and later my career, in web development over 11 years ago whilst playing drums in a metal band where (here’s a tell of my age) I found myself re-skinning my band and other bands MySpace accounts. Fortunately, when my teenage dream of becoming the next Metallica didn’t happen, I found my true calling in web development.

After university I was asked to go back to the company I completed a year’s placement at while studying and in the time since, I have honed my craft in modern web development using a popular CMS platform many other development languages.

But all work and no play makes Michael a dull boy and so outside of work I still have an interest in playing music but most of all I am embracing family life having a 5 year old daughter and 7 year old son. Between standing on lego bricks and explaining why you need to eat your broccoli I enjoy watching anything Sci-Fi and going to see live bands.

Fishtank is my new home and I’m looking forward to getting to stuck in so if you need help with an existing website or if you’re interested in starting a new project with us, get in touch…
